Sarawak Textile Museum

The Sarawak Textile Museum is situated at The Pavilion Building in Kuching City. Its architecture is a mixture of the English Renaissance and English Colonial. It is rectangular in design, three stories high with a flat concrete roof.

Two flights of timber staircase lead to the upper floors and are decorated with ornamental balustrades. Constructed in 1907 as a medical centre, it later became the headquarters of the Education Department. It was open to the public in August 2005.

It houses and displays authentic local textiles and costumes made by the ethnic community of Sarawak. Examples are the internationally known Iban pua kumbu and Sarawak Malay kain songket.

The exhibition flow follows the process of making a textile which starts with the raw material and through the weaving stage and ends with the finished product. Visitors will have the opportunity to test their skills on the loom and 'touch on' exhibits.
