KUCHING: The Sarawak Museum Department has signed a memorandum of understanding on a strategic partnership with the British Museum, marking a significant milestone towards becoming a globally recognised institution.
The MOU was signed by the department's director Nancy Jolhi and British Museum director Nicholas Cullinan in London on Wednesday (Nov 6).
The signing was witnessed by state Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, his deputy minister Datuk Sebastian Ting and the ministry's permanent secretary Datuk Sherrina Hussaini.
"This agreement paves the way for enhanced collaboration between both institutions, underscoring the Sarawak Museum Department's commitment to building international partnerships that highlight the unique history and heritage of Sarawak," the department said.
In a statement on Thursday (Nov 7), the department added that the MOU focuses on the study of Borneo and Sarawak artefacts housed in museums across Britain and at the Sarawak Museum.
It will facilitate joint research initiatives, exhibitions and cultural exchanges to advance the field of museology and promote a deeper understanding of Borneo's history.
The department also said that the internationally-renowned British Museum is a key partner in its vision to expand its global presence.
"This collaboration aligns with the department's strategic goal of becoming a globally engaged centre of history and heritage by 2030," it said.
