Abstract:
The Bidayuh community can be categorised into four main sub-groups, namely the Bukar Sadong of Serian, the Biatah of Penrissen, the Bau-Jagoi of Bau and Selakau of Lundu. Each sub-group has its own dialect. It is also obvious that each sub-group portrays different cultures. It is also well understood that the majority of Bidayuh reside in the First Division of Sarawak. (Lee Yong Leng, 1981). Noakes (1947), Elam (1937), Hose and McDougall (1966), Banks (1947), Harrisson (1950), Manson (1965), Roth (1968), Dickson (1962), King (1978) and Rubenstein (1973) each made individual studies on Bidayuh culture, which include games, festivals, dances, songs, lullabies, beliefs, handicrafts and many more. Nevertheless, none of them managed to come up with a detailed structure of any of the activities of the culture. It cannot be denied that Bidayuh are rich in culture. However, if this culture is not practised and learned by the present generation, sooner or later will become extinct and forgotten.
