Wallace Centre
The Wallace Centre is a gallery that celebrates the work of the naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace during his stay in Sarawak from 1854 to 1856. It was here that Wallace wrote his famous “The Sarawak Law” paper and uncovered countless new species of birds, reptiles, mammals, insects, and crustaceans. These findings shaped the study of natural history across the Malay Archipelago.
The gallery invites you to retrace Wallace’s footsteps through the lush landscapes of Mount Serumbu (Bukit Peninjau), Gunung Ngeli at Simunjan and Santubong, where he embarked on expeditions exploring the biodiversity of Sarawak. His journey was made possible with the help of both international and local assistants.
This included Ali, a trusted local companion whose contributions remain part of Wallace’s enduring legacy. At the Wallace Centre, history, discovery, and biodiversity come alive offering visitors a deeper appreciation of Sarawak’s place in the world of science and exploration.
