Abstract:
The first edition of “The Birds of Borneo” (Smythies, 1960) listed twenty-nine bird speciesas being endemic to Borneo, 17 of these being montane or sub-montane birds. The list has increased over the years due to taxonomic changes and the use of narrower species concepts. Currendy,a total of 38 birds are listed as being endemic to Borneo. It has been suggested that the continuing trend towards the use narrower species concepts could add several other species to this list (Smythies, 1999). This paper seeks to assess the current status of Bornean endemic birds found in Sarawak, using data accumulated during many surveys conducted by this author between 1986 and 2006. It also includes data collected between 1993 and 1994 by Robert B. Grubh during the survey of Lanjak-Entimau Wildlife Sanctuary conducted under the auspices of the International Tropical Timber Organization.
