Abstract:
Customs are usually identified with people who practise them. In a multiracial state, like Sarawak, where there are many races, namely the Bidayuh, the Chinese, the Iban, the Malays, the Melanaus and the Orang Ulu, it is to be expected that each of these communities has its own set of distinctive customs. For the purpose of this paper I will deal with certain aspects of the customs of the Bidayuhs, which have been long established and have been handed down by words of mouth from generation to generation. I shall touch on the customs that governs the lives of the Bidayuh people in their day-to-day interaction with those around them. That is, the social. customs which regulate the interpersonal relationship of the people relating to correct behaviours at home and public places.
