Abstract:
Most studies of the Indian society in Malaysia tend to refer to the Sikh community in passing only. This is probably due to their small numbers. As such there is a dearth of materials on a society which is in no way inconspicuous or backward. The Sikh community tends to stand out in that it is markedly different from the rest of the Indian society in appearance and habits. This paper is an attempt to outline the early history of the Sikhs in Sarawak and to study the changes it has undergone up to the present. To understand the changes it is necessary to know something about their culture and religion. As such a brief account of their culture and religion is included. This paper is based on observation, unstructured interviews with elderly Sikhs and books which provided only background material on the history of the Sikhs in Punjab, their religious principles and aspects of their culture. It is by no means the last word on the matter and opinions expressed are that of the writer.
