Abstract:
Malaysia is situated between the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean, lying along the tropical belt that divides the world into southern and northern hemispheres. Such a geographical location together with its historical background precondition Malaysia deep influence by the varied cultures that surround her. Malaysia is a multi-racial and multi-cultural country. There are local cultures and there are also foreign cultures. Basically, the main cultures within the Malaysian culture are the Western culture of the United States and Britain, the Islamic culture of the Arabs, the Chinese culture from China, the Indian culture from India and others. In this paper we shall explore the contributions of the Chinese culture towards the Malaysian culture. As the theme of this seminar places emphasis on ‘contributions’, I would therefore discuss the positive contributions of the Chinese culture towards the Malaysian culture.
