Abstract:
“Bejalai betungkat ka Adat Tinduk bepanggal ka Pengingat” which means respecting and upholding the rules of Adat has been the traditional virtue of the Iban community. Upon this virtue and the effectiveness of Adat has the Iban community for centuries depended for its preservation of peace and order and its continued existence and survival. Shaped and guided by the above starting point the discussion in this paper shall proceed with the birth of Adat as a background, its development and efficacy in the face of problems and challenges which arise in the context of a developing multi-racial state.
