Abstract:
The Orarig Ulu group is quite like a miniature United Nations. The various groups and subgroups which make up the Orang Ulu have their own oral histories and traditions, religious beliefs and customs. Thus, the festivities related to religious and social functions are numerous and colourful. This paper does not attempt to enumerate all the festivals of the Orang Ulu, let alone describe and discuss in detail each one of them. What this paper intends to do instead is, to offer a casual glance at the festivals and ventures to describe a few of the more prominent ones. For the sake of simplicity the author attempts to tackle the subject along religious and social aspects as they revolve around the agricultural (farming) and life cycles in the longhouse. Observations of festivals described in this paper are mainly confined to the Kenyah and Kayan of the middle Baram.
