Abstract:
Bewsher (1958), in the thirties, described the Bisayas as tair-complexioned. The men had uncut long hair coiled loosely around the crown of the head so that the smoother featured tend to have ‘prissy school-marm’ look. The ‘average’ present-day Bisaya is short-statured (men, 152—163 cm; women, 147—157 cm), straightor slightly wavy haired, short-legged and usually straight-eyed (Peranio, 1977). The Bisaya women were delicately built, fair and sometimes seemingly fragile. Their natural grace made them much sought after by neighbouring groups (Bewsher, 1958; Peranio, 1977) which could explain frequent concubine-collecting trips by Brunei aristocrats in the past.
