Abstract:
In terms of ethnography, the Orang Ulu are a complex group, comprising several indigenous minorities in the interior of Kapit, Bintulu, Miri and Limbang Divisions (see Map). In this paper, we try to trace how the words Orang Ulu came to be used as a collective term of reference, account for the ethnic groups that the term encompasses. Since the term Orang Ulu comprises several indigenous minorities,we will confine our discussion to particular aspects of each of these minorities. The formation of the Orang Ulu Nation Association (OUNA) is important to Orang Ulu in that it provides a sense of belonging to the group. In this paper, we will look into the history of OUNA and examine its roles and functions with respect to the overall Orang Ulu community. We will also look into the implications of OUNA on cultural identity and cultural unity of these indigenous minorities who consider themselves collectivelyas Orang Ulu. But who are the Orang Ulu, and why the term Orang Ulu?
