Abstract:
To the foreign tourist, the Malaysian cultural environment is both a hell and a paradise. He finds himself in a land where the inhabitants speak a variety of languages, practise different lifestyles and beliefs; where behavioral patterns, traditions and customs differ from one language group to another as distinctly as night and day. There is, arguably, as yet no dominant Malaysian culture but a proliferation of cultures and sub-cultures. Learning to cope with such a situation is a nightmare for the tourist but yet it is this plurality of communities and cultures which has given so much clout to the Malaysian scene— the rich array of living patterns, music, songs, dances, festivals, artefacts and handicrafts which are a delight for the tourist to see and experience. To the tourist,our cultural environment is both rich, exotic and exciting and is an invaluable asset which should be utilised and fully exploited for the purpose of tourism.
