Abstract:
A summary of the Belontiidae LIEM,1963 found in Sarawak in July 1986 by Allan and Barbara Brown, 173 Par I^ne, Bury, Lancashire, BL9 8JN, England. Text by Allan and Barbara Brown, July 1987. Photos Allan Brown. Our prime objective in visiting Sarawak for three weeks in the summer of 1986 was to survey the incidence of the genera Betta BLEEKER,1850 and Parosphromenus BLEEKER, 1879. We are indebted to Miss Josephine Pang, Fisheries Officer in Kuching, and her colleagues for their advice, kind assistance and hospitality. Each location was allocated a reference number from 1 to 30 plus the number “86” indicating the year 1986, “B&B” has been included in each location label to indicate that Brown & Brown recorded the data and collected the fish. Under the heading “OTHER SPECIES PRESENT” are the species which we observed incidentally, and this is not a record of ALL the species present. We hired a car and travelled 3000 km covering areas accessible from the main road from just south of Miri to the district by Lundu. We fished with hand-held dip-nets and successfully kept some of the fishes alive for subsequent study in England.
