Abstract:
It is now seven years since the publication of the revised checkUst of the mammals of Borneo (Medway, 1977), followed shortly by corrections and additions (Medway, 1978). In the interval, research and fieldwork have increased the knowledge of the land mammals of the region. For instance, during the survey of Gunung Mulu National Park undertaken jointly by the State Forest Department and the Royal Geographical Society in 1977—78 (Hanbury-Tension & Jermy, 1979), several additions were made to the Sarawak mammal fauna. The nominal list, subsequently published as Appendix V of the proposed management plan (Anderson, Jermy & Cranbrook, 1982), incorporated these records but drew no particular attention to them. Information on bats from Gunung Mulu National Park and other locations was included by Hill (1983), but this was set in the context of a review of much wider scope in which Sarawak specimens received no special emphasis. Observations and comments on Sarawak mammals have also appeared in other publications including, recently, a review of the muntjacs of Borneo, in which two distinct species were recognised (Groves & Grubb, 1982). From this variety of sources, revised nomenclature, additional State records and other new information on the mammals of Sarawak are recapitulated in the following paragraphs, under the family and species concerned in each case. The order of species follows Medway (1977). Readers who possess this checklist may care to make alterations to the text, while those who do not should perhaps take note that only a few copies remain unsold and no further edition is planned!
