Abstract:
The Bornean avifauna (Smythies, 1968) includes a rich assemblage of parasitic cuckoos, all of which also occur elsewhere in southern, south-eastern or eastern Asia. Among these as far as is known, there is no one cuckoo species whose breeding range is precisely coterminous with any one recorded brood-host species. Each cuckoo species therefore must show regional variation in the selection of hosts. It is likely that other special features of cuckoo breeding biology, such as inherited predisposition towards particular host species and the mimicry of hosts’ eggs, are also involved. At present, however, knowledge of the habits of these cuckoos in Borneo is extremely scanty. In fact,so little is recorded that it seems worthwhile to publisheven the briefnotes that follow. All observations were made in the GunungMulu National Park, Sarawak, during the course of the Royal Geographical Society’s expedition of 1977-78 (Hanbury-Tenison & Jermy, 1979; Hanbury-Tenison, 1980).
