Abstract:
‘A real Victorian figure— energetic, irascible,so self assured about the righteousness of what he is doing that he could be thoroughly unscrupulous.’ The words Asa Briggs applies to Lord Grimthorpe might perhaps be applied to Sir James Brooke, the first Raja of Sarawak. Born 1803, dying in 1868, his creative years fell within the reign of Queen Victoria. The other adjectives seem equally to apply, and yet the Raja remains an elusive figure. The attempt to write a new biography of him suggests some answers to the problems that surround his character and his career. It by no means solves all of them.
