Abstract:
This paper provides an overview of two major influences on the Bintulu dialect.’ Firstly, the sociocultural environment and secondly, other languages which speakers of the Bintulu dialect come into contact with. The former will provide the background for understanding how the linguistic influence affects the dialect at the phonological level. In the context of this paper, the phonological correspondence between the Bintulu dialect and (i) Standard Malay (the National Language) and (ii) Sarawak Malay (the local Linguafranca) define, in some important ways, the influence of sociocultural environment and other languages on the Bintulu dialect.
