Abstract:
This catalogue of plants is a fairly exhaustive list of the wild flora observed in 1963 growing around the holiday bungalows and larger house by the sea-shore near Santubong village at the mouth of the Kuching river in Sarawak, Borneo. The list also includes some of the cultivated plants in the village. A number of the shore-line plantswere found on or near the beach at Tanjong Bandong and along the path leading to it from Santubong. A few of the plants listed were seen on beaches opposite Santubong;one or two at Tanjong Po. The mountain species are compiled from the tour guide to Santubong mountain prepared by Dr. J. A.R. Anderson for the U.N.E.S.C.O. “Symposium on vegetation of the humid tropics” held in 1963. Vernacular names are taken from B.E. Smythies publication “Common Sarawak trees”. “MRH” references are to M.R. Henderson’s “Malayan Wild Flowers” which is profusely illustrated. Use is made of M.G. Dickson’s unpublished “List of trees in Kuching” 1952/53. References are also made to R.O. Williams “Useful and Ornamental Plants in Zanzibar and Pemba” and also to the “Useful and Ornamental Plants in Trinidad and Tobago” by the same author.
