Abstract:
A forester by training, and a botanist by preference. Bill Smythies became an ornithologist almost by chance. He served with distinction in his profession, becoming State Forest Officer, Brunei (and concurrently Section Forest Officer Limbang-Lawas) 1952-59, and Director of Forests, Sarawak, 1959- 64. Yet, internationally, his name must be better known as the author of two comprehensive books on the birds of the localities where he was employed: Birds of Burma (1941, 2nd edn 1953, reprint 1986, 3rd edn 1986) and Birds of Borneo (1960, 2nd edn 1968, 3rd edn 1981, 4th edn 1999). These books are landmarks in the development of the regional ornithology.
