Abstract:
How reliable is oral history? Recentlyone observer (Burch 1996: 131) concluded his comments to an exchange (Rodriguez 1994; Amsbury 1995) over how long reliable oral historical memory can survive, with a plea for people involved in oral history research always to try to establish, with as much precision as possible,a time frame for their studies. That time frame,no matter how vague it might be, should be explicitly stated in the text of every relevant publication,as well as in the captions of maps or other figures included in each publication. It is no longer adequate to treat the pastas an undifferentiated whole - no matter what society is involved. With so little information currently available on the Belaga Malay community, I endeavor to locate the information I was able to collect during a brief visit to Belaga in 1988 within a diachronic framework of what is known of Belaga, the Balui Valley, Sarawak, and northwest Borneo.
