Bermukun and bergendang is a performance originally from Sarawak. In the Asajaya area, the existence of bermukun and bergendang has been estimated since around the 1830s. Traditionally bermukun and bergendang perform during weddings for amusement and at the time those who are single might find a soulmate. Nowadays, this activity is more for entertainment, festivity and competition.

Back in the day, the members involved in bermukun and bergendang usually are next of kin. Son will play the drums while father plays the violin during the performance. Now anyone who is interested is encouraged to learn and participate in the show.

The bermukun and bergendang performer group consist of 5 members; the violinist ( pegasek wila) , the drummer or seh gendang and dancers who are called penandak. Dancers (penandak) and violinists (pengesek wila) are men and women (seh gendang) play the drums.

The musical instruments used during performances are drums and violins. Both drums are made of wood and secured with rattan while the top is covered with goat skin.

The songs presented during the bermukun and bergendang performance are in the form of poems and the accent used is the local Sarawak accent. Poems are exchanged between the two where the drummer/dancer (penandak) will start the poem and the drummer will respond to his words.

To start the performance, the dancer (penandak) will request a poem and followed by the strumming of the violin and accompanied with the vocals and drum beats by the drum player (seh gendang). For dancers (penandak) at least 10 dierent dancing styles for each poem.
