KUCHING (Nov 23): The Sarawak Budget 2025 has set aside more than RM100 million to bolster the state’s tourism sector, reflecting its commitment to becoming a premier tourist destination while fostering sustainable development.
Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah revealed this to reporters after the launch of the ‘Pristine Seas: Bringing Back the Ocean’ exhibition at the Borneo Cultures Museum today.
The funds, he noted, will support event organisation, infrastructure upgrades, and initiates aimed at growing the industry.
“This budget highlights our dedication to expanding the tourism sector. It includes events, infrastructure improvements, and other initiatives that are aligned with this goal, which will benefit both locals and visitors.”
Adding on, Abdul Karim noted that Sarawak’s tourism industry has shown consistent growth, achieving its 2022 and 2023 visitor arrival targets and, by early November, its goal for 2024.
“The successful hosting of numerous cultural, musical, and food events that attracted visitors and highlighted Sarawak’s vibrancy is evidence that our tourism sector is thriving.
“This significant allocation for tourism is part of broader efforts to promote the state’s unique heritage and natural beauty, while supporting creative industries, performing arts, and sustainable tourism development,” he said, expressing confidence that this funding would further elevate Sarawak as a key player in Malaysia’s tourism landscape.
Besides tourism allocation, the minister also said Sarawak continues to prioritise conservation efforts.
He highlighted the world’s longest reef ball project along the state’s coastline, as well as the establishment of marine parks like Talang Satang and Luconia Shoals, as testaments to its commitment to preserving natural resources while enhancing ecotourism opportunities.
“As Sarawak’s tourism industry continues to grow, I am optimistic about the future.
“The allocation demonstrates our resolve to ensure the tourism sector continues to thrive and contribute significantly to Sarawak’s development,” said Abdul Karim.
