KUCHING (Nov 23): The National Geographic Society’s ‘Pristine Seas: Bringing Back the Ocean’ exhibition is now open at the Temporary Gallery, Level 1 of the Borneo Cultures Museum from now until April 13, 2025.
The exhibition was launched by Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
“This exhibition not only showcases the splendour of our marine life and oceans, but also raises awareness about the Pristine Seas project and its efforts to restore ocean health and productivity,” he said in his speech.
Drawing on over a decade of global expeditions by the National Geographic Pristine Seas project, the exhibition showcases efforts to document and protect the ocean — aiming to heal, rebound and regenerate marine ecosystems.
Abdul Karim highlighted how the Pristine Seas project aligns with Sarawak’s Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030, which emphasises sustainable development and ecosystem preservation.
“The initiative has been a remarkable success, one we aspire to emulate here in Sarawak. It also reminds us to respect our oceans, protect marine life and be mindful of how we can contribute to ‘Bringing the Ocean Back,’” he said.
He also expressed confidence that it would inspire Sarawakians to champion inclusive and sustainable development.
The public can visit the exhibition to witness the beauty and importance of conserving our seas while appreciating the natural beauty of marine ecosystems.
Also present were Sarawak Museum Department Director Nancy Jolhi, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary Desmond Douglas Jerukan, Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka director Abang Haliman Abang Julai and National Archives Malaysia Sarawak director Afham Jauhari Aldi.
