Wednesday, 18 June 2025 - Sarawak Heritage Council Meeting No. 1/2025 was held at Hilton Kuching. Thank you to YB Dato Sri Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts Sarawak for chairing the meeting.
Among the major achievements presented was the number of visitors to the Borneo Cultures Museum which has now reached 1.35 million since its opening in 2022. BCM continues to be a major attraction for local and international tourists.
A total of 14 new heritage sites have been gazetted under the Sarawak Heritage Ordinance 2019, covering buildings, monuments and underwater heritage with high historical value.
The Sarawak Museum Department will also participate in the National Level International Museum Day 2025 celebration in Kedah this July. A total of 34 staff will represent the department in exhibition activities and inter-museum sports competitions.
The Department also received donations of important collections such as traditional goldsmith tools, an heirloom machete from Tebakang, an old ceramic vase from Santubong and two copper pots from Surau Kampung Tupong.
In addition, the Sarawak Museum Department also managed to obtain the skeleton of a 13-metre Sei whale (Balaenoptera borealis) which was found stranded and dead in the waters of Pulau Seduku before being trapped in the bridge structure under construction near the Triso Ferry. This acquisition was realised in collaboration with the Sri Aman Resident's Office, Lingga and Sebuyau District Offices, Sarawak Forestry Corporation, Fire and Rescue Department, Royal Malaysian Police and the local community.
Also present were the Deputy Minister of Tourism, YB Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew; Deputy Minister of Creative Industries and Performing Arts, YB Datuk Snowdan Lawan; and the Director of the Sarawak Museum Department, Puan Nancy Hj Jolhi.

We are proud to share that the Sarawak Museum Department is a key partner in the UNESCO Field Evaluation Mission. This mission will review some of Sarawak’s important cultural and natural sites. These include the Borneo Cultures Museum, Sungai Jaong Archeological Park and Tuang Schist Semeba.
